Fun-Dining Versus Fine-Dining

Date Posted: 29-01-2009

Sometimes, there’s only so long that you can stare over a shared antipasto plate and into the eyes of your beloved. While the romantic, lovey-dovey times are fine for intimate occasions, it’s always important to remember to have fun with your sweetheart. So, instead of telling us which restaurant had the lighting set to “mood”, we want to know where you’ve had a terrifically amusing dining experience and why – be it a date, anniversary or just a spur of the moment night out.

The most amusing experence we had was at a local restaurant in Fairfield. It was a BYO so my husband bought one of his best wines from the cellar. First off the wine was a long time coming and we found they had given it to someone else, then my husband went out back to the mens room and was locked out. Just as well we could laugh.

To me fun dining is all about a great vibe and a comfortable venue.
I dont need the service to be brilliant, just attentive and personable.
I dont need expenive tableware or a 'posh' setting, just some interesting decorations to look at, great food to look forward to, and a happy buz all around me!

The funniest experience we had was, when we had booked 30 people birthday party, but when we arrived, restuarant had booked this for the following week. all of us had to do with all the tables being scattered around the restaurant, and the whole night everybody was really "table hopping" all night. When it come to sing "happy birthday" the whole restaurant stood up to sing(120) . it end up being 120 people birthday party, with everybody including chef, coming with best wishes.
needless to say, it was a huge sucsess.

Yes katie I agree dining for me is more about how enjoyable the experience is not the posh setting. Some my my best dining moments have been at laid back restaurants but the food was delicious, the service helpful but not fawning and the area clean! One spot at margaret river we collected our own cutlery but the food was divine. It does help that we were on holidays at the time.

The funniest dining experience I had was for my birthday, I invited 20 of my friends to a turkish restaurant down the road from where I lived, had never been there before. Great fun place with a great atmosphere, we sat on cusions on the floor, with a big long table and ate with our hands. They brought out belly dancers, well, two of my friends got up and joined them, it was hilarious and the funniest night. I'll never forget it!

From my first visit to Jerusalem on Hindley Street in Adelaide I was hooked. The hessian bags on the ceiling and the orange plastic seating was not much to look at so I was dubious, this continued when the plastic tumblers for our BYO drinks came out. But when it came time to order our groups food and work out the banquet the waiter was great - cracking jokes and making sure that we'd have enough to eat. Then the food came out....and came out....and came out and it was great. The waiter kept up the banter all night but his top priority was making sure that we were looked after. Jerusalem proves that you don't have to be fancy for your clients to enjoy their night. I've introduced all my friends to Jerusalem.

Fun dining for me is to spend time at Watsons Bay and enjoy the ambience with DOYLES famous fish and chips from their takeaway. Sitting under a tree with a bottle of Red with friends.
Much cheaper than dining (in a finer fashion) in DOYLES famous Restaurant, where
the same meal can cost ten fold.

Mine was on a holiday to Brampton Island, I went to go get a glass of juice and instead of pressing the glass against the lever I pulled on it, meaning that not only did I break the leaver, but the whole 10L orange juice dispenser dispensed on the floor!

I think we need a bit of both. It is not really fun if you go to a "fun dining" place and the food is less than ordinary. If we could have a fun dining experience where they also emphasise on good food, then that would be a place we'd go to all the time and recommend to everyone.

On our Honeymoon in Bora Bora, the food was unbelievably expensive (imagine paying $50 for a salad). So my wife and i shared a plate of Club sandwich & fries for lunch everyday at the intercontinental. It was an unforgettable experience indeed!

Instead of taking me to a fancy restaurant, for our first date my boyfriend took me to a pub where you cook your own steaks. You choose the steak you want from the display cabinet and take it to this massive indoor bbq and everyone stands around cooking and swapping tips on how to cook the perfect steak. It's really different and really fun and best of all you get your steak cooked just the way you like it!!

My partner took me for a lovely weekend into the city for a birthday- spa room, walking distance from restaurants, movies, massages and wine bars. Booked a romantic dinner in an Italian Restaurant - brought a bottle of expensive wine we had been saving for that 'special occasion' with us. The waiter promptly took our bottle, poured it into a caraffe then proceeded to pour the wine into a water glass. then upon realising his mistake, went to throw it out and rinse the cup out! At $180 a bottle we werent impressed! Then comes the ordering.. our dear Italian restaurant had run out of spaghetti.... ahh... we had many-a-laughs. Cream Restaurant in East Perth - delicious and completely decadent fine dining

Kublai Khan Mongolian Barbeque Restaurant in Adelaide is definately a fun option. You select your own meat, vegies, spices, oils and sauces and the chef cooks it in front of you on a hot plate. Something different, you can choose different options each time,as its a buffet.

Definitely a bit of both. I find Fun dining is pretty much every meal at home or at friends and families places.

When I go out for dinner with my partner I want the experience to be magical. The joy of getting all dressed up and sitting on the Brisbane River looking at the Story Bridge, sipping on cellar wines and eating the tasty delights at Alchemy to me is perfect. (If i had an aparmtnet on the River i would eat home a lot more lol).

When you go out for dinner in a group all that applies too and it's always fun because your all together relaxing.

the best fun we had at a restaurant, is a japanese Tepanyaki restaurant called
ICHI BAN at sussex st.
the whole office went there after work , and watched the chef cook the food fresh for us on a hot plate. i have to warn everyone that it might be a good idea to wear an old shirt of ask for a disposable apron, because part of the entertainment it to try and catch the food, in a bowl or even in your mouth.
i would highly recommend the experience, it is both entertaining (not to mention watching your collegues make a fool of themselves) and the food is delicious.

For a fun night out with a twist we like to go to Govindas Restaurant and Cinema in Darlinghurst. The restaurant isn't very flash but the vegetarian food is awesome even if you are not a vegetarian. After dinner you get to go upstairs and lay out on comfy bed style lounges to watch the latests movies (and have a cuddle).

The best fun i have ever had with my husband was at Garuvas Hidden Tranquility Restaurant and Bar! It was spur of the moment as we were heading home after a long day at work and couldnt be bothered cooking. We stumbled across Garuvas and i reluctantly followed my husband inside, not knowing what to expect.
Oh my gosh! It was unbelievable, nothing i have ever seen before. We went to the cocktail bar which had lots of floor cushins and mood lighting. Not to mention coktails to die for! After several sex on the beach drinks we were taking to our table which was low to the ground and surrounded in a white tent like sheet, secluding us from the other tables. We ordered a selection of plates to share which were asian inspired, different to anything i have ever eaten before. After more cocktails we were rolling aroung having the times of our lives and eventually opened our tent up and met the people next to us! It was the most unique experience i have ever had and we are still friends with the people we met today!!! Thanks Garuva!
